As I’m sure you’ve heard the news, Hong Kong is making world headlines for its protesting in the streets. In the picture below is the Central district where the HK government administration buildings are located. Directly across the water in the center of the picture is the building where Rhema Hong Kong is being held. Just off the top right of the picture is where Faith Family Church is located.
Last night after our all church prayer meeting three of our children and some FFC church members visited the Occupy Central area, here photo’d at midnight Oct 1.
Many people do not understand that this is not a “Tiananmen Square” type protest where people started gathering to promote Democracy. This is a protest -to disapprove of the broken promise made by Beijing. When the handover of HK occurred in 1997, the promise was made to give Hong Kong full democracy by 2017. But under the new leadership of Xi Jinping, they have reported that they will not be permitting an open candidate election in Hong Kong, but will continue to hand-select a few pro-Beijing candidates for HK people to choose from.
This has brought out hundreds of thousands of mostly college age students, all idealistically imagining a free Hong Kong if they can succeed in protesting against Beijing’s change of heart. Though not an easy task, Beijing has backed down in other past protests by HK residents.
We just held a church-wide prayer meeting on National Day, a holiday meant to celebrate China’s 65 years of independence, but in HK, has turned into an annual day to protest the numerous disagreeable actions coming from Beijing.
At this moment, a political, volcanic eruption is building up. The problem being both sides cannot afford to lose face. If the students back down, they feel they will be crushed by Beijing’s heavy handed government and never have an opportunity like this again. They may well be right. Beijing fears that if they back down, not only will they lose ground in HK and embolden the dissidents, but protests could spread to discontented Mainland Chinese.
So, we are here in the middle of it all with a front row view to the unfolding historical events. Nobody predicted the protests would have grown to this size and nobody knows what will happen next. Many of our young church members are joining the protests, even our own children are visiting the center of protests (probably more out of curiosity.) Though difficult for us as parents to understand—they were raised in HK, their friends are HK Chinese, why wouldn’t they be interested in the destiny of their city? Even in our newly started “Rhema Hong Kong” some of the students are boycotting classes ‘for the sake of the cause…’
But I believe that we, and all of you, our partners who have supported our work in HK for over a decade, were called “for such a time as this!” Sharmin, and I, are asking all of you to pray with us for a peaceful resolution to the protests. But more importantly, pray that God’s divine plan for HK and all China continue to be implemented, and that Fischer Family Ministries, Faith Family Church, Rhema Hong Kong and the work we do in Mainland China through Faith to the Nations will be protected and be able to continue.
You, our partners, have a special right to pray for the leaders, not only in Hong Kong, but also Mainland China. First, Hong Kong is our home and we are called here to minister. And now, all of our family members permanent residents. That gives you, those connected to us and called to pray for us, authority to ask God for our HK leaders to make decisions for the Kingdom of Heaven! But here’s the bigger part. As Hong Kong has been placed back under China, we are technically under the authority of the leadership of Mainland China—so you also have authority to pray that God influences China’s leaders to make decisions to “live in peace” and permit the spreading of the Gospel of Jesus Christ! And through that authority, angels can go forth with your words and cause things to happen!
So again, we ask you to join with us and agree in prayer for the protection of the Fischer family and the members of Faith Family Church, and that the plan of God goes forth in this city, of which we are fully confident we were called to. We believe that many will be saved in Hong Kong and that our church will be a place where the Holy Spirit will demonstrate His greatness!
Thank you from all the Fischer Family,
